Tyson Fury calls it quits after back-to-back Usyk losses

Boxing champion Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury, the charismatic heavyweight known as the “Gypsy King,” has announced his retirement from boxing following back-to-back losses to Ukrainian rival Oleksandr Usyk.

The decision marks what could be the conclusion of a storied and unpredictable career spanning nearly two decades.

In a brief video shared on social media, Fury stated, “Hi everybody, I’m going to make this short and sweet. I’d like to announce my retirement from boxing. It’s been a blast, I’ve loved every single minute of it.”

Fury’s announcement comes after his unanimous decision loss to Usyk on December 21, 2024, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The defeat, where Fury was the +125 underdog with the top online sportsbooks, followed a closely contested split decision loss to Usyk in May 2024.

During their December bout, Usyk dominated with precision, landing 42% of his punches compared to Fury’s 28%. Fury’s career record now stands at 34 wins (24 by knockout), two losses, and one draw.

Fury first made headlines in 2015 when he ended Wladimir Klitschko’s decade-long reign as heavyweight champion, claiming the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles.

After a prolonged hiatus due to personal struggles, including mental health challenges and substance abuse, Fury staged a remarkable comeback, culminating in his 2020 victory over Deontay Wilder to reclaim the world championship.

Known for his brash personality and unorthodox tactics, Fury became a fan favourite for his antics outside the ring and his skill inside it.

His ability to capture attention transcended boxing, with moments like dressing as Batman at press conferences and delivering memorable trash talk.

While Fury’s retirement seems definitive, scepticism persists within the boxing community.

Promoter Eddie Hearn, who represents Anthony Joshua, voiced doubt, stating, “I doubt it [is the last time we will see him box].”

The potential for an all-British clash between Fury and Joshua, long considered one of boxing’s most anticipated matchups, now appears increasingly unlikely.

Frank Warren, Fury’s promoter, expressed support for the decision, saying, “If that’s what he wants to do, that’s great. He’s done everything he can do. Probably been the best British heavyweight of his generation by far.”

Fury’s legacy as one of boxing’s most charismatic and dominant figures remains secure.

Whether this retirement is final or another chapter in his unpredictable journey, Fury has left an indelible mark on the sport.

As fans and analysts alike reflect on his achievements, the “Gypsy King” bows out as a two-time heavyweight champion who redefined the limits of resilience and showmanship.
