THE UFC returns to Brazil as the one woman wrecking ball Cris Cyborg Justino meets Lina Lasnsberg in the middle of the octagon.
Cyborg has been an animal since her professional debut, going on a undefeated streak that extends across 16 fights.
The only issue for Justino is her ability to cut weight, given her physical dimensions.
Speaking on an MMA podcast during the week, Cyborg revealed she has to cut ‘at least 25 pounds’ if she is to make weight for her fight this weekend.
Justino normally walks around at 170 pounds, but is fighting at 140 this weekend. UFC experts like Yves Edwards are calling for the UFC to build a division around the world’s number one pound-for-pound fighter.
“To make 140 pounds she’s running six miles every day. That’s a lot of mileage to put on your knees and your ankles,” Edwards said.
“I’m more sympathetic to her trying to make 140 or trying to make 135.”
The allure of fight fans seeing Cyborg at an optimum weight is enough incentive for the UFC to open the new division up in Edwards’ opinion.
“If she can’t make 135 pounds, we want to see the best Cris Cyborg that we can. I think we should try to implement a weight class for her,”
It might be a battle for the best women’s fighter in the world to cut down in order to have opponents to battle, but her fight night competitor Lina Lansberg has no sympathy.
Citing the weight exception (135 pounds to 140) that Cyborg was already given, Lansberg said the fight will not go ahead if her opponent fails to make the weight.
“We are both professionals and we have signed a contract at 140 pounds,” Lansberg said at the press day.
“And she has already been given 140 instead of 135, and we all have to remember the UFC weight is 135, and she’s the only one fighting above it. I’m fighting at 135 as well, and the contract is 140, so I do expect her to make weight, and I’ll fight at 140 and nothing else.”
Here’s hoping Cyborg can trim down to the 140 mark and the fight can go ahead.
UFC odds and bets
Cyborg is an absolute machine in the octagon and, if anything, has improved over the last few years since hooking up with trainer Jason Parillo, who has taken her to the next level.
Not many are giving Lansberg a chance, but the ‘Eblow Queen’ is a very accomplished fighter in her own right.
A solid striker whose muay thai skills are more than proficient, Lansberg will trouble Cyborg in ways her previous foes have not.
It is one thing to face off against a fighter as skilled as Cyborg and another to actually fight a combatant with that aura, which is how a lot of Justino’s fights have been won before the referee even begins the bout.
Lansberg will probably last longer than Cyborg’s opening UFC opponent but we are predicting another walkover here.
Cyborg to win in the first round by way of knockout.
Cris Justino to win via first round KO: -250.00 via Bovada.lv
