Mirra Andreeva pulled off a major upset, defeating Iga Swiatek 7-6(1), 1-6, 6-3 to advance to the Indian Wells final against world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka.
Teenager Mirra Andreeva pulled off a stunning upset at the Indian Wells Open on Friday, toppling defending champion Iga Swiatek 7-6(1), 1-6, 6-3 in the semi-finals of the WTA 1000 event.
The victory marks Andreeva’s second consecutive win over world No. 1 Swiatek, making her just the third player to defeat the Pole at Indian Wells and the fifth teenager to reach the tournament final.
Heading into the match, tennis sportsbooks had Andreeva as the underdog, with Dabble listing her at +137 against Swiatek’s dominant 23-3 tournament record.
However, the 17-year-old defied the odds, edging a tense first-set tiebreak before recovering from a mid-match dip to close out the win in two hours and 17 minutes.
“It was a really tough match, tough conditions,” Andreeva said after the victory.
“I tried to really hang in there. It was not easy, but I’m just super happy with the win today, and I can’t wait to play finals on Sunday.”
Awaiting Andreeva in the championship match is world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, who dismantled Madison Keys 6-0, 6-1 in a rematch of the 2025 Australian Open final.
Sabalenka holds a 4-1 head-to-head advantage over Andreeva, including two dominant wins this season.
Top online betting sites have installed the Belarusian as the -275 favorite, with Andreeva priced at +175 to claim her maiden WTA 1000 title.
Reflecting on the challenge ahead, Andreeva acknowledged Sabalenka’s dominance but remains optimistic about her chances.
“Yeah, the matches that we played this year didn’t really go my way,” she said.
“I can say she almost killed me, especially in Melbourne.
“Yeah, I’m going to try to take revenge, because I still have nothing to lose, and I feel like the match is going to be probably entertaining.
“There is going to be a lot of winners, a lot of great points.
“Now it’s going to be [my coach’s] job to prepare me well for this match, so I hope she is going to do it.
“But I will just go out there as for every other match and try to play my best and to fight for every point, and then we’re going to see who’s going to win.”
