Zverev books third-round spot at the Madrid Open after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Bautista Agut. See how the betting odds shifted.
Top seed Alexander Zverev wasted no time stamping his authority on the 2025 Madrid Open, dispatching Spanish veteran Roberto Bautista Agut in just over an hour on Friday to book his spot in the third round.
Priced as a heavy -909.09 favorite with tennis betting sites, the German delivered a clinical performance, blasting 10 aces and hammering 31 winners while committing just 24 unforced errors in a 6-2, 6-2 rout.
“It was a good match; I knew I had to focus against Roberto,” Zverev said post-match. “I knew that it was going to be a tough challenge, and I’m very happy with the win. This is my favorite center court in the world; I’ve only lost twice here in my entire life. I hope that stays the way it is throughout the next 10 days and that I can continue playing good tennis.”
With Carlos Alcaraz withdrawing from the tournament due to injury, Zverev have now firmed into +400 favoritism to lift the trophy at Madrid, according to top online sportsbooks. Alcaraz had been the original favorite at +220 before pulling out.
The 28-year-old now faces Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the next round and is priced at -227.27 to advance at Nags.bet. However, Zverev is keeping his focus squarely on his own performance.
“I really try to focus on playing good tennis, that’s my main goal,” he said. “I feel like I played good tennis in Munich, I feel like I played good tennis here in the first round, and that is my main focus. When you do that, I think the results will come by themselves. I just want to continue playing good, I just want to continue enjoying my time on the court as well, and the rest will take care of itself.”
Elsewhere in Madrid on Friday, seeds Taylor Fritz, Casper Ruud, and Ben Shelton all advanced safely to the third round. Russians Daniil Medvedev and Andrey Rublev progressed without hitting a ball after Laslo Djere and Gael Monfils withdrew ahead of their matches.
There was less fortune for others. No.8 seed Holger Rune withdrew mid-match after dropping the first set against Flavio Cobolli, while seeded players Arthur Fils and Felix Auger-Aliassime both suffered upset losses to Argentines Francisco Comesana and Juan Manuel Cerundolo, respectively.
