Denmark has recently introduced a requirement for people who place sports bets at locations like kiosks and betting shops.
Starting October 1, 2023, bettors will need to provide a Player ID to ensure consumer protection and address concerns such as gambling and money laundering. This player ID will be connected to each individual’s gambling account with the betting operator.
It will allow users to set deposit limits and ensure that they receive their winnings even if they misplace their betting slips.
Operators have the flexibility to choose between ID cards or virtual IDs integrated into their company apps. This initiative is part of an effort by the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden to tackle standing issues in the country’s gambling industry.
Previously anonymous betting at locations made it easier for underage individuals to gamble and facilitated criminal activities.
By implementing the Player ID system, the government aims to create a gambling environment, protect individuals, and reduce illegal activities within the betting sector. The decision to introduce this Player ID system follows years of discussions and political consensus that started back in 2019. Other countries have also implemented measures.
Denmark’s approach allows operators to choose between physical or virtual player IDs, providing a personalized method of player identification. These changes are set to be fully enforced by July 1, 2024, aligning with Denmark’s commitment to protecting consumers and promoting gambling.
Recent data from Spillemyndigheden has emphasized the importance of addressing gambling, revealing that 50% of problem gamblers in the country placed their bet before turning 18. Denmark’s implementation of the Player ID requirement demonstrates a proactive stance in promoting responsible gambling and protecting vulnerable individuals from potential harm associated with gambling.
This initiative signifies an advancement in creating a more regulated gambling environment within the country.
