DraftKings ready to launch West Virginia sports betting app

The West Virginia Lottery has completed testing on a mobile app that will bring online sports betting to the state’s gambling community.

Built by DraftKings for the Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races, the app is scheduled for a soft launch sometime next week.

WV Lottery director John Myers told local reporters the software passed anti-fraud and ID verification tests with flying colours.

“We were making sure we can get the reports out of it that we need,” he said.

“Making sure that we can verify the player that has the account is the one playing and to make sure the geo-location system works and those people are actually located inside the state of West Virginia.”

Although the Mountain State legalised gambling on sports last summer, punters have not had the option to place wagers via mobile since the short-lived BetLucky app went offline in March this year.

That particular platform is the subject of an ongoing legal battle between casino operator Delaware North and technology developer Miomni Gaming.

Myers said the BetLucky mobile app “did outperform the retail location” at the Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras casinos “on several weeks” during its brief existence.

There are five licensed casino venues in West Virginia, all of which are permitted to offer both land-based and mobile sports betting.
