South Africa begin their white-ball tour of England this Tuesday as we head to Headingley to kick off the three-match ODI series.
Following the completion of ‘The Hundred’ competition in recent weeks, the English batsmen will have to turn their focus from the shorter format to extend over the 50-over period.
Earlier in the English summer, the home side had a successful ODI series against the West Indies, securing a 3-0 series sweep.
Similarly, South Africa are coming off some strong results of their own, beating Australia 2-1 on foreign soil.
Leading cricket bookmakers have England as -172.41 favorites in their own conditions, with the visitors paying +137.
Don’t expect any surprises in the English lineup, with the explosive duo of Ben Duckett and Jamie Smith opening the batting. Joe Root, Harry Brook and Jos Buttler provide plenty of class, with Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks and Jamie Overton the likely choices to provide all-round support.
Jofra Archer returns to the squad and is tipped to lead the pace attack alongside Brydon Carse, with Adil Rashid providing the spin threat.
England’s predicted XI:
Similarly, expect South Africa to field a similar side to their Australian tour, starting with Aiden Markram and Ryan Rickleton at the top of the order. Skipper Temba Bavuma comes in at three, ahead of Matthew Breetzke, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis.
Wiaan Mulder and Senuran Muthusamy provide the all-round threat, Kagiso Rabada returns to the pace attack alongside Lungi Ngidi, and Keshav Maharaj is the spin option.
South Africa’s predicted XI:
Throughout their tour of Australia, South Africa showed how they could adapt to foreign conditions. England are a strong batting side, but their bowling has been poor in recent times, and that could be an issue against the explosive Proteas. While they aren’t the favorites, the visitors offer great value in a clash where they should have the edge.
Root has an incredible ODI record in recent times, averaging over 75 in his last nine matches. The former captain averages 48 in home conditions, while he loves playing South Africa, averaging 45 against them. At +150 with major sports betting sites, back Root to continue his good form by hitting 50 or more runs.
Just four matches into his ODI career, Breetzke is quickly making a name for himself. The 26-year-old has passed 50 in every one of his innings, mastering foreign conditions. On that form, Breetzke offers great value to pass the mark again at +150.
