Fernandes stars as Man United beat Leicester City 3-0 in EPL

Manchester United thrashed Leicester City 3-0 in the English Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford in Ruud van Nistelrooy’s final game as interim manager.

Bruno Fernandes marked his 250th appearance for the club in spectacular fashion, breaking the deadlock in the 17th minute with a powerful low shot.

Leicester left-back Victor Kristiansen then inadvertently diverted a shot from the United captain past his own goalkeeper, doubling the home side’s advantage before the break.

Fernandes rounded out a productive day with an assist for Alejandro Garnacho, who beautifully curled the ball past Leicester shot-stopper Mads Hermansen to secure three crucial points for United.

Despite their victory, the Red Devils remain 13th on the table with 15 points — four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal, who drew 1-1 with Chelsea in their London derby.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s second defeat in three games condemned them to 15th with 10 points — just three points above the drop zone.

The win means van Nistelrooy ends his brief spell at the helm unbeaten, with three wins and one draw across the EPL, League Cup and Europa League.

Speaking after the game, the Dutchman was more than pleased by his side’s performance.

“I could see the players were fighting themselves through the game in the end,” he said.

“There were some good bits. We scored two great goals and the own goal was a good attack as well.

“I agree it’s an important three points. The most important was the league position, which needed to be improved.

“It was a very good performance and we could not have done better. The class of the team shows and we gave very little away, except on big occasion.”

When asked about this future, van Nistelrooy remained open-minded.

“After this block of four games, it felt like closure for that period and the future is open — that’s the way I felt it,” he said.

“It was a beautiful moment to be able to share that with the supporters, and special.

“It was gratitude from my side to them, and the reception I was able to receive was unbelievable, so I can only thank them.”

Ruben Amorim will be in the dugout on November 24 in his first game in charge of Manchester United, with online bookmakers paying -140.85 for the Red Devils to beat Ipswich Town (+354) at Portman Road.
