Malaysian police detain 118 after gambling raids in KL

KL police have seized hundreds of laptops and phones after breaking up a Chinese gambling ring.

Malaysian gambling news

Malaysian police have detained 118 people after raiding an international gambling den in Kuala Lumpur.

Authorities also confiscated 118 laptop computers and 479 mobile phones.

The illegal enterprise turned an average profit of 6 million ringgit (US $1.4m) per month by targeting Chinese gamblers.

The majority of those arrested were also Chinese, and it is understood they chose their base of operations because Malaysian gambling laws are less severe than China’s.

“The raid was conducted at a bungalow near Lorong Gurney (Kuala Lumpur) and saw 118 arrests,” said KL police chief Datuk Seri Mazlan Lazim.

“The suspects were believed to have entered the country on tourist visas.

“We have contacted the Chinese embassy regarding this matter.”

The news follows a similar case that emerged last week, when five men were arrested in Kuala Lumpur over a mobile marketing scheme that netted them 3.3m ringgit (US $780k) per month.
