After a 5-0 trouncing at the hands of Liverpool, the Red Devils responded last weekend with a 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur that ended up costing Nuno Espirito Santos his job. They were less convincing in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, however, needing a pair of injury-time strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo to snatch a 2-2 draw against Atalanta.

Raphael Varane sustained a thigh injury in that game and will miss a few weeks of football, which is bad news for a team already dealing with some serious issues in defence. United will also be without Paul Pogba, who is still serving a suspension for his red card in the loss to Liverpool.

Manchester City stumbled in their last EPL game, copping a 2-0 loss to Crystal Palace despite having 68 per cent of possession and hitting more than twice as many passes as the Eagles did. But they found their groove again in the Champions League, beating Club Brugge 4-1 with goals from Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling and Gabriel Jesus.

The big out for Man City is Aymeric Laporte, who was sent off in controversial circumstances in the loss to Palace. They won’t lose much, however, with Ruben Dias set to return to the starting XI, while the likes of Nathan Ake and Fernandinho are on standby.

Given Manchester United’s recent defensive woes, it would be easy to take the overs about this matchup. In the last few years, however, the Manchester derby has not produced much in the way of goals. Each of their last five clashes have gone under 2.5 total goals, and there is some value in backing that trend to continue.

Manchester City to win

While United showed a little bit in their win against a pretty ordinary Spurs side, it is impossible to back them in here. It is not often that Man City lose two in a row in the EPL, and the game against Crystal Palace might have been just the wakeup call they needed. If you want to boost the odds, City to win to nil at +225 with Bovada is a good way to go.
