Star wide receivers A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurin are all planning to hold out from offseason training camp in hopes of receiving a deal in the range of the $30m contracts Tyreek Hill and Devante Adams recently signed.
In the wake of Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill’s new massive contracts, an interesting story is starting to develop in the NFL. The aforementioned star wide receivers shattered previous contract records and will be earning upwards of US$30 million. Now, A.J. Brown, Deebo Samuel and Terry McLaurin are all planning to hold out from offseason training camp in hopes of receiving a deal in the range of Hill and Adams’.
All three of these players were highly important over the past couple of seasons and all hail from the 2019 draft class. They are able to negotiate for a contract extension but this is earlier than normal. They have leverage on their teams, and will be hoping for a massive money deal or a trade to a team that will pay them.
For all three guys, there would be no shortage of suitors if they end up on the trade block. They are all elite playmakers who would raise the profile of any offense they end up on.
Samuel, a San Francisco 49er, enjoyed a breakout season last year where he had 1,405 yards and 14 total touchdowns. Eight of those TD’s came on rushing plays and Deebo’s versatility is unprecedented.
Brown topped 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons with the Titans but battled injuries last year and only finished with 869 yards in 13 games. However, he is a proven difference maker and the Titans went 11-2 in games he played last season.
McLaurin, a former third-round pick for Washington, has dealt with horrible quarterbacks over his career but still has emerged as one of the best receivers in the league. He had 77 catches for 1,053 yards and five touchdowns last season. Those numbers may seem good, not great, but considering who’s been throwing him the ball, it is quite impressive.
All three of these guys will be gravely missed if their teams don’t pony up the money necessary. It’s hard to imagine these teams letting this crop of young talent go, but crazier things have happened this offseason.
The 49ers currently have odds at +1500 to win next season’s Super Bowl. The Titans are at +2500 and the Commanders are at +7000. It currently doesn’t make sense to bet on any of these teams as their odds were calculated with these receivers on the team. Losing them would be a big blow to their chances.
Ultimately, this offseason continues to be wild and this latest news could lead to even bigger changes in the NFL picture. This is an interesting development about three elite pass catchers. Whether something further happens remains to be seen, but it will be worth keeping your eyes out for any potential trades or contract extensions.
