The NFL season is officially less than 100 days away. While it’s still a long ways out, it’s ok to be excited. The schedule is out and we have a good idea of what the final rosters will be. It’s still early but there are some good bets on the market. Now can be a good time to get in front of the hype and score some value. For this article, we are covering the AFC and the potential value in betting on who will win the division. Let’s get into it. All odds courtesy of Bovada.
AFC East: New York Jets
In all likelihood, the Buffalo Bills will win this division. However, their odds are -250 and it’s not worth betting on. There could be value on them throughout the season if they go through a rough stretch but there isn’t any right now. The next highest favorite with the betting sites in this division is the Miami Dolphins. Their odds are at +450 and while they could be improved on last season, we are not counting on it. The same goes for the New England Patriots at +500. They are good, and will likely have an improved Mac Jones under center, but neither of these teams match up to the Bills.
Instead, we will take the New York Jets at +2000. While it’s unlikely they win the division, their odds are counting on them to be the same team as last year. That all depends on the progress of sophomore QB Zach Wilson. The Jets built their offensive line and surrounded Wilson with playmakers. Essentially, the Jets brass made it so there are no excuses. Wilson is set up to succeed. If he does, and the Jets look improved, these odds will lower. While it may be a longshot, in the AFC East, this bet is the only future worth betting right now.
New York Jets
AFC North: Baltimore Ravens
This division is going to be an entertaining race. The Cleveland Browns are the favorites at +190 after they traded for Deshaun Watson. Watson is an electrifying QB who will improve the Browns record but he will likely be suspended for a good amount of games. That will severely hinder the Browns and keep them from winning this division. Also, there are the reigning Super Bowl losers in the Cincinnati Bengals. Their odds are at +200. However, their run last season felt a little fluky and these odds are overweighing their finish last year. They may be good again, but this division will be tough and there is value elsewhere. Also, the Pittsburgh Steelers are in this division but they are rebuilding with a rookie QB and their odds of +1100 are not enticing enough to bet.
That leaves us with the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have a former MVP QB in Lamar Jackson at the helm and they have been remarkably consistent. They were the most injured team in NFL history last year and still almost made the playoffs. Their defense should be improved as that was their weakness last year. On offense, they will be as strong as ever and should be a contender for the Super Bowl. At these odds, the Ravens to win the division is great value for a team who is always in the mix.
Baltimore Ravens
AFC South: Tennessee Titans
This is projected to be one of the weakest divisions in football. Right off the bat, we can eliminate the Houston Texans from contention. Their odds are at +2800 but they have one of the worst rosters in football and it’s expected they will competing for the first overall pick. Also, The Jaguars have some hype but at +600 to win the division, it’s getting a little out of hand. They were the worst team in football last season and they should improve, but not enough to make them contenders for the division. The favorite in this division is the Indianapolis Colts. They traded for Matt Ryan and it is expected he makes a huge impact. The Colts have a good roster, but Ryan is 36 and not the QB he was a couple years ago. Indianapolis may get better, but -125 is a little too rich for our liking.
Lastly, we have the reigning division champs and the one seed in the AFC last year, the Tennessee Titans. They didn’t really change their team too much besides trading away their star Wide Receiver A.J. Brown for a first round pick. They used that pick to take a WR and it’s expected their selection, Treylon Burks, is an impact player right away. The Titans faltered in the playoffs but have always been a strong regular season team. Their coach, Mike Vrabel, is one of the most underrated coaches in the league and he should have his team in contention. At these odds, the Titans are a steal as they should be the favorite to win this division.
Tennessee Titans
AFC West: Kansas City Chiefs
The AFC West is absolutely loaded and all four teams have a shot to make the playoffs. However, we are sticking with Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs. Simply put, Mahomes is still the best quarterback in this division and although the Chiefs will be without Tyreek Hill for this upcoming season, coach Andy Reid always puts together a good offense. The Chiefs will once again contend for a Super Bowl and with Mahomes leading them, they always have a good chance. This division is improved, but the Chiefs should still reign supreme. Take them at a crazy value and watch Mahomes cook his divisional rivals as he has done throughout his illustrious career.
