THE NFL match of the week sees an AFC West conference clash between a Kansas City team fresh off the bye, travelling to Oakland to face the top-of-the-tree Raiders.
The Raiders are one of the hottest teams in the NFL right now.
The bad boys from Oakland are being lead sensationally by 25-year-old quarterback Derek Carr, who exceeded 300-yards passing for the second straight game in the Raiders terrific win over the Chargers last week.
The former Fresno State product has a chance to make it three-straight games in excess of 300-yards against a Kansas City defence that is ranked 21st in the NFL for average yards conceded (370) per game this season.
Carr said he is starting to read the game like a seasoned quarterback despite being in just his third NFL season.
“All the games I’ve played, all the blitzes I’ve seen, coverages; you just have so much more experience now in my third year, than I did when I was a rookie, and that’s what slows the game down for you.” Carr said.
Carr might be in career-best form right now, but his teammates are also coming to the party.
The Raiders currently rank third in yards per game (391.6) and fifth in points per game (28.4) across the entire NFL.
We are only early into the 2016/17 NFL season, but already the Kansas City Chiefs need to dig themselves out of a hole.
Kansas sits third in the AFC West, and if they are unable to get the road win in week six they will fall to 2-3, placing them in an uphill battle to make the playoffs.
In their last game two weeks ago the Chiefs were hammered by 29-points against the Steelers, but coach Andy Reid said his team is not panicking.
“We’re 2-2,” Reid said.
“It’s not the end of the world, even though it feels that way. That’s how things are in the National Football League. We’ve got a week to step back, analyse and fix some of these issues.”
Confidence comes from the top in sporting organisations and it seems Reid’s words have struck a chord within the playing group.
Kansas City quarterback Alex Smith reiterated his coach’s comments, saying the team cannot let a single loss define their season.
“We have to look at this and look at ourselves in the mirror and move on,” Smith said.
“At the same time, you can’t let it linger. It’s just one game and it’s a long season.”
Match preview
An AFC West matchup awaits NFL fans as the Chiefs travel to face the Raiders in a pivotal match up for both sides.
It is the second straight week the Raiders host an AFC West opponent after just scrapping past the Chargers to move to 4-1.
Oakland’s offense has been the cornerstone of their success thus far, led by emerging superstar quarterback Derek Carr.
Carr has been one of the best performing quarterbacks this season, and this week he comes up against a defence that has only managed five sacks for the entire season.
The Chiefs need to win this and are not without hope, and they will be praying history repeats itself as we head into week six of the NFL season.
Andy Reid coached sides are 15-2 in his career after a bye, and last year’s result after their league enforced rest was a 16 point hammering of the Broncos back in 2015.
Can Reid bring some of that post-bye magic to Oakland on Sunday? We are not so sure.
We were surprised that the Raiders at home are at odds of $1.88 given the form they are in but we are not complaining.
Oakland should advance to 5-1, keeping them at the top of the AFC West.
