Online gambling is back on the agenda in the US state of Indiana, where lawmakers are close to passing new legislation that would legalise sports betting.

A conference committee in Indianapolis has made a few notable changes to Senate Bill 552 since it was voted up by the House of Representatives last week.

Provisions for online gambling had been removed by Ben Smaltz of the House Public Policy Committee, but they are now back in play.

It is not yet known whether the new laws will allow for remote registration at online bookmakers, or whether players will instead have to visit land-based gambling venues in order to open betting accounts.

Rates for casino licences and sites for proposed gaming halls were also discussed at the conference, with differing opinions coming from the two houses of government.

The inclusion of mobile wagering could have a significant impact on the state’s finances, as a 2017 study commissioned by the American Gaming Association indicates that online betting can increase revenue from sports gambling taxes by upwards of 100 per cent.
