Serie A 2021/22 Matchweek 23 preview & best bets

Two of Serie A’s top clubs collide on Sunday when AC Milan hosts Juventus in the headline act for Matchweek 23. That matchup is included in our Serie A best bets this weekend along with Lazio vs Atalanta and Cagliari vs Fiorentina.

Lazio vs Atalanta

Atalanta (12-6-3) earned a point in Sunday’s 0-0 draw at home against Inter Milan. It was the club’s second 0-0 draw in its last three matches. Atalanta is 7-2-1 over its last 10 games, but that includes an underwhelming 1-2-1 record over its last four matches. Lazio (10-5-7) defeated Salernitana 3-0 on Saturday to move to 3-1-1 over its last five games. Ciro Immobile has four goals in Lazio’s last three matches and the club has scored three goals in four of its last five matches.

We like the OVER 3 goals in this matchup. Lazio’s offense is red hot, and despite Atalanta’s two recent scoreless draws, the club is still averaging over two goals per game in 2021-22. A 2-1 result would be a push and seems to be the low end of scores one might expect from this matchup.

Cagliari vs Fiorentina

Fiorentina (11-2-8) bounced back from a 4-0 loss on the road to Torino with a 6-0 win on Monday at home against Genoa. The club is now 4-2-1 over its last seven matches and is averaging 2.71 goals per game over that stretch. Cagliari (3-7-12) had its two-match win streak snapped on Sunday in a 1-0 loss on the road to AS Roma. Prior to its two wins over Bologna and Sampdoria, Cagliari went 0-4-7 over its previous 11 matches.

While Cagliari deserves some props for getting into the win column, those victories came against two teams in the bottom half of the Serie A table. Fiorentina is a significantly tougher opponent than Bologna or Sampdoria, and the soccer betting odds on this matchup don’t seem to be giving them enough respect. We’ll happily take the clearly better team here at a fairly modest price.

AC Milan vs Juventus

AC Milan (15-3-4) missed out on a golden opportunity to gain ground on Inter Milan in a matchweek that Inter had a draw, losing outright to Spezia 2-1 as big home favorites on Monday. Now Milan will try to bounce back against a tougher opponent this Sunday at home. Juventus (12-5-5) is unbeaten in its last eight matches with a 6-2-0 record after beating Udinese 2-0 last Saturday.

It’s tough to pass up on Juventus getting underdog odds in this matchup. This match could easily go either way or end in a draw, as indicated by the razor-thin margin on the betting line for all three results. But Juventus has outscored its opponents 16-5 over its current unbeaten streak and offers too much value as a +180 underdog to pass up on here. We’ll take a stab on the road team in what should be this week’s best match.
