Sinner crashes out of Wimbledon in record-breaking quarter-final

World No.1 Jannik Sinner has been eliminated in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon, losing to No.5 seed Daniil Medvedev in a record-breaking five-set clash on Tuesday in London.

The Italian was widely tipped to win his second Grand Slam this year, with tennis bookies putting him as a +175 favourite alongside Carlos Alcaraz in outright betting.

However, Medvedev snapped a five-match losing streak against Sinner to book his place in the Wimbledon semi-finals. The Russian was a +333 underdog heading into the clash.

With Medvedev winning 6-7 (7), 6-4, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-3, the record for the most five-set matches in a Grand Slam was broken as well. Some 36 men’s singles matches have gone the distance at this year’s Wimbledon Championships — the most in the Open Era.

Australian Open revenge for Medvedev

Less than six months ago, Sinner and Medvedev met in the final of the Australian Open.

Medvedev made a brilliant start, winning the first two sets, before Sinner pegged him back and won in five.

In the Wimbledon quarter-finals, it was sweet revenge for Medvedev.

Sinner won a high-quality first set but struggled physically at times across the remainder of the match. While he did turn on the afterburners and win the fourth set 6-2, Medvedev had more in the tank and was the one who powered home this time.

“Already this morning I didn’t feel great. Had some problems. Then with the fatigue, it was tough,” said Sinner.

“The physio told me better to take some time because he watched me, and I didn’t seem in shape to play.

“I was struggling physically. It was not easy moment. I tried to fight with what I had today.”

Sinner was forced to leave the court for treatment at one stage in the third set.

“I was dizzy quite a lot,” he explained.

“Actually, off court I had a little bit the toughest time maybe. When I went back, I tried my best.”

Alcaraz next as Medvedev eyes another big scalp

In the other men’s quarter-final on Tuesday, Carlos Alcaraz got past an in-form Tommy Paul in four sets, winning 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2.

The Spaniard is now the favourite to win Wimbledon, with his odds shortening to +120 following Sinner’s exit.

Many were expecting Sinner to be Alcaraz’s semi-final opponent, but instead he will face Medvedev on Friday.

The 21-year-old leads the pair’s head-to-head record 4-2. He has won both of their most recent encounters in straight sets in the last year.

However, Medvedev is 2-1 against Alcaraz in Grand Slams, having prevailed in their latest meeting at the 2023 US Open.

Nevertheless, the Russian heads into Friday’s semi-final as a +250 underdog at Bovada, with Alcaraz paying -333.33 to reach his second consecutive Wimbledon final.
