Learner Tien continued his momentum on the ATP Tour with a win at Delray Beach on Wednesday, while Joao Fonseca saluted at the Argentina Open.
Learner Tien and Joao Fonseca picked up impressive wins on Wednesday at the Delray Beach Open and Argentina Open, respectively, continuing their strong start to the 2025 ATP Tour season.
The teenagers first made a splash in January by upsetting high-ranked opponents at the Australian Open, with Fonseca knocking out No.8 seed Andrey Rublev and Tien beating No.5 Daniil Medvedev.
Tien was particularly impressive in Melbourne, making the fourth round in his debut appearance.
The American added to his Australian Open success with a first-round win over Adam Walton at the ATP 250 event at Delray Beach in Florida, racing past the world No.89 6-4, 6-3 for just his seventh victory on the main tour.
The 19-year-old entered the match a slight favourite at tennis bookmakers, with Nags.bet putting him at -158.73 to beat the Australian.
Tennis betting sites also favour him in his next match against No.4 seed Matteo Arnaldi, paying -138.89 for Tien to continue his run.
Fonseca, on the other hand, lived up to the hype with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win over No.8 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry in Buenos Aires.
The 18-year-old powered past Etcheverry, dismissing the former No.27 in just 84 minutes.
Despite Etcheverry being the home player in Argentina, Fonseca found plenty of support from the crowd as he blazed 34 winners including 21 from the forehand wing.
“Everywhere I play there are some Brazilians cheering for me, even in Argentina,” Fonseca said after the match.
“That’s super nice, you can see some people wearing Fonseca T-shirts [in the crowd].
“It’s super nice to have the Brazilian crowd.
“Thanks also to the Argentinians for respecting the match, I know it’s difficult playing against an Argentinian.
“I’m very thankful to win my first match here and hopefully I can go [further] this week.”
Next up Fonseca takes on another Argentinian in Federico Coria, and Nags.bet has the Brazilian youngster as a -625 favourite to prevail.
The teen has a steep path ahead of him if he is to claim his maiden title on the ATP Tour, however, with world No.2 Alexander Zverev favourite across online bookmakers to claim the trophy.
