Manchester United are set to make the trip to London this weekend for Match Week 7 of the 2018/19 English Premier League.
The Red devils will line up against Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, as they look to make up ground after a sluggish start to the campaign.
This is one of the most fascinating EPL betting encounters of the week, given the start to the season and importance on a result.
Their lethargic start has by and large not only been witnessed in the Premier League, as Old Trafford was stunned to tangible silence when Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Derby County on Tuesday night.
Having a bet on the Carabo Cup, Champions League or other comps this season?
United began the day well, and their early dominance translated into a sweet sweeping move that saw Juan Mata stab the ball into the back of the net in the third minute. Anthony Martial took flight on the left wing before passing the ball to Romelu Lukaku who laid it off to Jesse Lingard; the England international in turn unselfishly setting up Mata for his first goal in a staggering nine months.
Derby however kept pressing the hosts and soon found their equalizer after the break through Harry Wilson. The 21-year old, on loan from Liverpool, restored parity with a sensational dipping free-kick that the flat-footed Sergio Romero could only admire as it went in from 30 yards.
The biggest turning point in the match nevertheless came in the 67th minute when Romero, who was back in the saddle for the first time this season having recovered from a knee injury, was sent off for a deliberate handball outside the box.
The Rams would go on to grab the lead five minutes from time through a Jack Marriott header, but substitute Marouane Fellaini forced the encounter into post- match penalties with a towering header in stoppage time. Both teams were clinical from 12-yards, but it was Frank Lampard’s young side that would triumph 8-7 on penalties following Phil Jones’s miss at sudden death.
The victory was without question a historic win for Lampard, who not only played under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, but also took over the Rams job just two months ago.
It was however an agonizing defeat for Jose, with another performance endemic of United’s poor run of form that has seen them go without a win in their last three matches at home in all competitions. The poor performances, unstable more than anything, nonetheless give an insight into what has been a troubled Manchester United camp in recent weeks.
Churning out wins on the bounce has remained stubbornly elusive for the Red devils who are already knocked out of the League Cup and are rooted seventh in the Premier League; standing a whopping eight points adrift of leaders Liverpool after just six games.
The wedge between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho on the other hand seems to be widening by the day, after the United gaffer made it apparent the midfielder would never captain the club again due to concerns over his attitude and approach; this coming after Pogba made comments over how they don’t play enough attacking football to kill off matches.
West Ham United made Chelsea drop points for the first time this season following a barren draw last Sunday in the Premier League. The vital point for the Hammers proved costly for Maurizio Sarri’s charges, as the Blues had to relinquish their place at the helm to Liverpool who have maintained their perfect start to the campaign.
Manuel Pellegrini could for the second week running start Michail Antonio up front in place of Marko Arnautovic who picked up a minor injury during the 3-1 win away to Everton a fortnight ago.
Former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez has yet to recover from a sickness, but Jack Wilshere is ruled out of the tie having undergone ankle surgery.
Nemanja Matic and Marcus Rashford, both absent during the 1-1 draw with Wolves last weekend, are once again available for selection after serving their domestic red card suspensions; the former even featuring during the midweek loss to Derby County.
West Ham vs. Manchester United betting predictions
Whereas Manchester United are already out of the Carabao Cup, West Ham United’s fate in the competition may be known when they line up against League Two side Macclesfield Town on Wednesday night.
Despite their recent lacklustre results, Jose Mourinho could very well arrest the decline with a win in London.
