New York regulators give thumbs up for sports betting

New York is another step closer to becoming the latest US state to legalise wagering on sports.

New York sports betting laws

The New York State Gaming Commission has given preliminary approval to a set of rules and regulations that would allow sports betting at the state’s four licensed casinos.

They are the Del Lago Resort & Casino in Tyre, Resorts World Catskills in Kiamesha Lake, Rivers Casino & Resort in Schenectady and Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols.

The state’s eight racinos are not included, but there are provisions for regulated sports wagering at Indian casinos.

Mobile betting would remain illegal and there are no plans to introduce an integrity fee, despite the wishes of the nation’s major sporting leagues.

The seven-person panel met on Monday and voted unanimously in favour of the 33-page proposal, which comes less than 12 months after the US Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA).

It is an obvious show of intent from the commission, as the New York State Legislature is yet to clear a path for legalised sports wagering the way New Jersey, Pennsylvania and several other states already have.

However, there is plenty that needs to happen before New Yorkers can place bets legally in their home state.

The next phase is a 60-day period for public comment, after which the commission will conduct a review and then adopt the proposed changes if there are no major objections.
