Both the Portland Trail Blazers and the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to get back in the winners’ circle at the Staples Center this Thursday night.

The Blazers have lost two in a row and three of their last four games to fall under .500 on the young season. Their defense has been their demise in the last two losses, giving up 128 and 129 points, respectively.

The Clippers had their two-game winning streak snapped in their last game, falling to the Milwaukee Bucks 129-124.

While a general rule of thumb is to avoid betting on a team on the second leg of a back-to-back, Kawhi Leonard will return to face the Blazers after sitting out the Clippers’ loss to the Bucks on Wednesday night. LA are still without their other star in Paul George, who will resume practice activities on Saturday.

The Blazers have covered the spread in six of their last seven games facing the Clippers and are 5-0 ATS in their last five games facing them in LA.

In their last game the Blazers lost to the injury-ravaged Golden State Warriors 127-118. One of the main reasons Portland lost is they were much less aggressive going to the rack, as they had 11 points on free throws while the Warriors had 33.

Damian Lillard led the Blazers with 39 points in the Warriors loss, and he and Hassan Whiteside (22 points, 11 rebounds) both shot over 50% from the floor. CJ McCollum was only 6/16 from the floor and, despite averaging 20.7 ppg on the season, has tallied 30 points across his last two games while failing to shoot over 40% from the field in each.

Lillard ranks third in the NBA points averages with 31.1 ppg. Even in losing the last two games he has gone for 39 and 33 points, respectively, and shot over 57% in each game.

The Clippers put up a fight without Leonard in their 129-124 loss to the Bucks. Although they only shot 41.8% from the floor, they held Milwaukee to 42.9% shooting. Montrezl Harrell had 34 points on 13/25 shooting and Lou Williams, who was starting for Leonard, also went for 34 points but was only 9/27 from the floor.

Leonard leads the Clippers with 29.3 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. He, Williams (22 ppg), and Harrell (21.1 ppg) lead the offense and can light it up, so the Blazers will need to lift their defensive game.
